Courses at Upcoming AAD: Contact Dermatitis
Dr. Christen Mowad, a dermatologist affiliated with Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania, and a clinical professor at Temple University in Philadelphia, recommends courses in contact dermatitis that will be presented at the upcoming annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, held March 21–25 in Denver, Colorado.
Friday, March 21, 2014; 2:00 PM–5:00 PM
C007–Basic Contact Dermatitis: This session will focus on the basics of contact dermatitis, including the initial approach to the patient, diagnosis and basic patch testing. There will be a discussion on how to counsel patients in the patch test clinic. Contact dermatitis in the pediatric population will be reviewed. In addition, allergic contact dermatitis to common allergens such as preservatives, fragrances and metals will be highlighted.
Comment: This should be a great introduction or refresher course to review the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis, specifically developing an approach to the assessment of patients, including the patch test procedure
Monday, March 24; 2:00 PM–5:00 PM
C023–Advanced Contact Dermatitis: Currently important and/or controversial contact allergens and their sources will be highlighted. An interactive format will be fostered by review of selected literature, presentations of real cases, and commentary, discussion, or debate among tertiary-care experts.
Comment: This course will look at regional perioral dermatitis as well as the role of contact urticaria in contact allergy. There will be a discussion of new and emerging allergens, which the practicing dermatologist interested in patch testing should be aware of.
Monday, March 24, 2014; 3:30 PM–5:30 PM
F134–Hand and Foot Psoriasis, Dermatitis and Other Inflammatory Dermatoses: Common inflammatory dermatoses such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis often involve hands and feet. Unfortunately the morphology is often different on palms and soles making the diagnosis more challenging. Treatment of these inflammatory skin conditions is also more difficult when palms or soles are involved. This session will review the different clinical presentations of common hand and feet dermatoses and the role of patch testing. The focus will be on the management of hand and foot psoriasis, dermatitis and palmo-plantar pustulosis. Recent data on the efficacy of biological agents and oral systemic agents and will be reviewed and discussed.
Comment: This lecture will provide a discussion of the differential diagnosis to be considered in the patient with hand and foot dermatitis. It will also review the consideration of allergy in this regional dermatitis. Of major interest is using evidence-based information to determine the most appropriate therapy in these patients.
Tuesday, March 25, 2014; 10:00 AM–12:00 PM
F151–Contact Dermatitis: Concepts and Controversies: We will discuss the presentations and potential causes of implant dermatitis, including orthopedic and cardiac devices. We will describe contact dermatitis highlights, with a focus on recent and innovative developments in the field of contact dermatitis. This session is directed towards dermatologists and dermatology residents.
Comment: This course is focused on the controversial issue of allergic contact dermatitis associated with implants, which is an increasing concern in those receiving or having already received implants. The management of these patients both pre- and post-op can be challenging.
