Jonathan Temte MD, PhD

Jonathan Temte, MD, PhD, was born and raised in La Crosse, Wisconsin and received his BA in biology from Luther College, (Decorah, Iowa) in 1980. He received an MS in biological oceanography from Oregon State University in 1986 and a PhD in zoology (minor: epidemiology) from the University of Wisconsin in 1993. His MS and PhD work centered on photoperiodism and birth timing of seals and sea lions.

Dr. Temte pursued his medical training at the UW-Madison Medical School receiving his MD in 1987. He is a 1993 graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Madison Family Practice Residency where he stayed on as a faculty, achieving the rank of Professor. He teaches family practice residents and practices full-spectrum primary care medicine to an under-served and highly diverse community at Wingra Family Medical Center in Madison, Wisconsin. He became Associate Dean for Public Health and Community Engagement in 2019.

Dr. Temte completed his tenure as chair of the US Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) in 2015. He represented the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) at the CDC Measles Elimination Meeting in 2000 and the Rubella Elimination Meeting in 2004. He currently chairs the Wisconsin Council on Immunization Practices. He served as AAFP liaison to the ACIP from 2004-2008 and then was appointed to two four-year terms as a voting member of ACIP (2008-2015). He is the first family physician to have served as chair. During his tenure at ACIP, Jon chaired Work Groups on MMRV Safety, Evidence-based Recommendations, and MMR Vaccine. He is the principal investigator of the Wisconsin Optional Influenza Surveillance Enhancements Program, the Oregon Child Absenteeism due to Respiratory Disease Study. His current research interests include viral disease surveillance in primary care and communities, seasonality and epidemiology of influenza, and climate change and health in primary care.
