This study investigated the incidence of thrombotic events in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in a New York City hospital system. The authors found that, overall, 16% of patients were diagnosed with at least one thrombotic event, including 6.2% of patients having a venous thrombosis and 11.1% of patients having an arterial thrombotic event.
This study demonstrated an increased incidence of both venous and arterial thromboses in patients hospitalized with COVID-19, which might be due to hypoxic injury, endothelial dysfunction, and/or cytokine storm causing hypercoagulability or increased platelet activity. More research is warranted to better define the pathophysiology of this highly morbid complication of COVID-19.

Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are at increased risk of thrombosis. However, studies have been limited in size, did not report all thrombotic events, and focused on patients with severe disease hospitalized in intensive care units (ICUs). We assessed the incidence of, and risk factors for, venous and arterial thrombotic events in all hospitalized patients with COVID-19 at a large health system consisting of 4 hospitals in New York City.
