This review article discusses the role for imaging in detection and management of COVID-19 infection, suggesting that any patient with moderate to severe symptoms should be evaluated with either chest x-ray or CT depending on clinical indications and resource availability. Imaging findings can be variable, with most common patterns including peripheral rounded bilateral ground-glass opacities with possible progression to consolidations later in disease course; "crazy paving" can also be seen. Atypical findings that should prompt consideration of alternative diagnoses include single lobar infiltrate, cavitation, tree-in-bud pattern, and centrilobular nodules. Point-of-care ultrasound is also mentioned as a useful bedside imaging modality for evaluating possible thoracic complications of this disease, such as pneumothorax or pericardial and pleural effusions.
This article provides a comprehensive review of thoracic imaging modalities and characteristic findings that can aid in diagnosis and management of COVID-19 pneumonia. This is a clinically essential topic as effective testing for this disease remains an area requiring further optimization to facilitate best possible patient care and infection control.

COVID-19 is an illness caused by a novel coronavirus that has rapidly escalated into a global pandemic leading to an urgent medical effort to better characterize this disease biologically, clinically and by imaging. In this review, we present the current approach to imaging of COVID-19 pneumonia. We focus on the appropriate utilization of thoracic imaging modalities to guide clinical management. We will also describe radiologic findings that are considered typical, atypical and generally not compatible with of COVID-19 infection. Further, we review imaging examples of COVID-19 imaging mimics, such as organizing pneumonia, eosinophilic pneumonia and other viral infections.
