New Guidelines for the Treatment of Patients With Severe Community-Acquired Pneumonia

- The authors of this review summarize the new 2023 European guidelines for the treatment of patients with severe community-acquired pneumonia (sCAP). Some highlighted features comprise the emerging role of rapid diagnostic testing such as real-time PCR, the addition of a macrolide rather than a fluoroquinolone to a beta-lactam antibiotic, the use of standard sCAP antibiotics rather than targeting anaerobes when aspiration is suspected, and the use of corticosteroids in treating patients with sCAP and shock. The authors note the ongoing controversy over indications for the use of corticosteroids in patients with sCAP and recommend future questions to investigate.
- This review summarizes the new recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with sCAP, the evidence supporting these guidelines, and areas for further research.
