This study evaluated 109 children and adolescents in Switzerland who were seropositive for SARS-CoV-2 and compared them against 1246 seronegative children to evaluate for long-term symptoms of infection (long COVID). A total of 4 of 109 seropositive children (4%) reported at least one symptom lasting beyond 12 weeks compared with 28 of 1246 seronegative children (2%). None of the children were hospitalized for long COVID symptoms.
A relatively low prevalence of long COVID is found in children who are seropositive for SARS-CoV-2. However, long COVID is a potential concern in children.
Children can experience SARS-CoV-2 postviral syndromes, but it is unclear to what extent these individuals are affected by long COVID. Evidence is predominantly limited to select populations without control groups,1-4 which does not allow estimating the overall prevalence and burden in a general pediatric population. We compared symptoms compatible with long COVID in children and adolescents (hereafter “children”) reported within 6 months after SARS-CoV-2 serologic testing.
