Long-Term Symptom Profiles After COVID-19 vs Other Acute Respiratory Infections
TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
- This prospective study compared post-acute symptom profiles of 1311 participants with recent COVID-19 infections with those of 472 participants with non–COVID-19 acute respiratory infections (ARIs) and 8388 healthy controls. Although participants in both the COVID-19 and non-COVID ARI groups demonstrated a comparable burden of persistent symptoms, those with COVID-19 showed higher odds of taste/smell issues, hair loss, sweating, heart racing, and memory problems.
- The results of this study suggest that post-infectious syndromes in patients with non–COVID-19 ARIs may be underrecognized. Prior studies comparing post–COVID-19 syndromes with other post-ARI syndromes were limited to patients who were hospitalized and/or those with more severe initial disease.
