Dental panoramic radiographs (DPR) and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans have been recommended as dental imaging modalities of choice during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, ill patients cannot stand or sit motionless for the duration of the exposure (up to 40 seconds) for a DPR or CBCT study. On the other hand, intraoral imaging studies can be performed on supine (as well as seated) patients using mobile (handheld) intraoral x-ray generators. CBCT is not an alternative to intraoral imaging because of its lower resolution, artifacts due to movement or metallic restorations, as well as much higher radiation dose.
The authors conclude that intraoral radiography offers the best diagnostic efficiency, although a sectional DPR would be an acceptable alternative for patients who cannot tolerate intraoral x-ray receptors. Dentists and radiography staff are reminded to follow COVID-19 infection-control guidance, including use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
