In Memory of Sheryl Stebbins
The PracticeUpdate community lost an amazing professional last week, and our Elsevier team lost a wonderful colleague and friend.
Sheryl Stebbins passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2023. To say that she will be missed is an understatement.
For those readers who had the opportunity to work with Sheryl over the past decade plus, you will no doubt have noticed her diligence, efficiency, and passion for helping to educate health care practitioners. When Sheryl started working with PracticeUpdate, it was shortly after launch, and we were just beginning to acquire readers. Now, many years later, we have almost 310,000 subscribers and various types of content that Sheryl helped define.
Sheryl loved contributing to PracticeUpdate, and told me this often. She thoroughly enjoyed talking weekly with the different medical specialty editorial boards and often had fun stories or interesting insights to share from these discussions. Sheryl had the utmost respect for the PracticeUpdate editors and for the many expert contributors with whom she corresponded over the years. Receiving a positive comment or "thank you" note from an editor or a contributor was always a moment of pride for Sheryl, and she would happily share this with me and other team members.
As hard as Sheryl worked at Elsevier and as large as her contributions were, this was actually the calmer part of her career. Prior to her role at Elsevier, Sheryl was an executive and team leader at multiple large publishers, including Kaplan, Waldon Books, and Random House. She always had amazing stories of interactions with prominent authors and other unique individuals in the publishing industry.
Sheryl loved to travel and would do so often in her free time. I had the pleasure of traveling with Sheryl many times over the years as we attended medical conferences, editorial board meetings, and Elsevier engagements. I have so many fond memories from these trips. Sheryl also loved her family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them whenever she could.
For those of us on the editorial team, and for many of our editorial board members, it is difficult to think of PracticeUpdate without thinking of Sheryl Stebbins. She helped build PracticeUpdate, and her many contributions are reflected throughout the brand. Sheryl genuinely believed that PracticeUpdate was improving patient care by ensuring that physicians were updated on the latest clinical insights and medical information. It is this thought that will help us carry on without Sheryl and continue the great work that she managed on a daily basis. Sheryl’s memory will live on in every piece of content that we publish.
In our day-to-day routines it is easy to forget how short life truly is. Take time to genuinely live; be thankful for every precious moment.
