Dental Manifestations in Patients With Celiac Disease
TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
- In multiple studies conducted internationally, certain dental manifestations are well-recognized extragastrointestinal signs of celiac disease. These include delayed eruption and maturation of permanent teeth in children and dental enamel defects in children and adults. These dental manifestations may be the only presenting signs in patients yet undiagnosed with celiac disease.
- General and pediatric dentists play a critical role in the early diagnosis of celiac disease, for which treatment with a gluten-free diet may help prevent its progression and long-term complications.
