E-cigarettes made their debut as a “safer” alternative to tobacco use, claimed by researchers to be a breakthrough invention for those who needed help with smoking cessation. Since then, the primary target population has changed dramatically; e-cigarettes have gained popularity among both cigarette smokers and nonsmokers and, more importantly, have proven to be “not safe.” As a matter of fact, when conducting a search on the negative effects of vaping on our health, no “body system” is left unaffected. Some examples of systems and associated known negative effects from this popular social habit include the following: respiratory—2019 EVALI (e-cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury); cardiovascular—Hypertension (HTN); Coronary Artery Disease (CAD); cognition and brain development—altered structure of the prefrontal cortex; mental health; and carcinogenesis. Ironically, Hon Lik, the Chinese pharmacist who invented e-cigarettes, was motivated by the death of his father from lung cancer due to heavy smoking. The list gets interestingly longer with the addition of facial and oral cavity trauma, which is a unique risk from vaping compared with other known harmful social habits. Soft and hard tissue injuries involving mainly the head and neck region caused by e-cigarette explosions and their projectiles are as real as gunshot wounds and motor vehicle crashes.
