Correlation Between Celiac Disease and Dental Enamel Defects

This study evaluated the association between celiac disease (CD) and dental enamel defects (DEDs). The decayed, missing, and filled teeth scores as well as the prevalence of aphthous stomatitis and xerostomia were higher in patients with CD than in controls. CD was found to be associated with a significantly higher risk of developing molar incisor hypomineralization and specific enamel defects. DEDs were considered specific for CD if they were present symmetrically on both sides and in all four quadrants of permanent teeth, especially affecting the molars and incisors.
- Even in the absence of gastrointestinal signs, dentists are empowered to act as sentinels in identifying potential patients with CD through the recognition of DEDs. Timely referral to a gastroenterologist can facilitate an early definitive diagnosis of CD, permitting the adoption of a gluten-free diet, which is essential to manage CD and prevent serious consequences.
