Conversion Rate of Essential Tremor to Essential Tremor Parkinson's Disease
TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
- This study sought to determine whether essential tremor (ET) increases the risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD) through a prospective longitudinal cohort study involving patients with ET. The investigators discovered that the incidence of PD among patients with ET was substantially higher than that reported in historical population-based control groups across numerous countries. Overall, 3.6% of the patients experienced a conversion from ET to ETPD, and the incidence of PD in the ET cohort was 3.4 to 23.5 times higher than the incidence reported in the literature.
- This study provides important information for healthcare providers and their patients with ET regarding the higher potential risk of developing PD. However, further studies are needed to explore the mechanistic association between ET and PD.
