Utilization of telehealth services has increased greatly since the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors of this study had the large majority of patients follow up with telemedicine visits and a telephone-based survey post visit. Approximately one-third of patients needed some assistance to set up their telemedicine accounts, but the rate of no-shows was substantially higher in face-to-face visits (67%) than telehealth visits (17%). Importantly, 82% of patients indicated that they would prefer a telemedicine visit at their next appointment.
Although each hospital has its own medical system, technical challenges, and patient populations, these data suggest that telehealth services can offer effective care across many diagnoses. The authors highlight that certain conditions warrant in-person visits, but they also suggest that the provision of telehealth services during the COVID-19 pandemic remains promising and that further evolution of the technology is needed.
