Dr. Machineni is an Obesity Medicine specialist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the director of the Medical Weight Program. The Medical Weight program founded by Dr. Machineni provides much needed clinical management services for obesity at UNC, recruits for clinical drug trials and other clinical research studies in obesity.  He specializes in treatment of obesity and has expertise in obesity pharmacotherapy. His research focus is the study of mechanisms of energy regulation in response to nutrients and obesity surgery.  His teaching interests include the development of tools and approaches for the treatment of obesity in the primary care setting.

Dr. Machineni received his medical degree from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and completed his residency in Internal Medicine from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He trained in clinical research at the New York Obesity and Nutrition Research center in New York City, and pursued a clinical and research fellowship in Obesity Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School in Boston. He served as a faculty for the MGH Obesity Metabolism and Nutrition Institute (OMNI) and as a Co-Director of the Blackburn Course in Obesity Medicine: Treating Obesity and the Obesity Medicine Board Review Course.
