Professor Sophia Zoungas is an endocrinologist with a national and international reputation as a clinician researcher in the fields of diabetes and cardiovascular health. She is Head, School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University and Professor of Diabetes, Vascular Health and Ageing.

Her major research focus is the design and conduct of large, multicentre, randomised clinical trials and implementation projects that answer important clinical questions. Professor Zoungas has led one of the largest and longest clinical trial of intensive glucose and blood pressure management in diabetes and is currently leading the largest, international community-based clinical trial of statins in older adults ≥70 years. Her research has resulted in changes to treatment recommendations by many national and international bodies including the US Food and Drug Administration, American Diabetes Association, Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes and NHF/NHMRC. Papers on which she is author have been cited over 15,500 times.
