Sidney C. Smith, Jr., M.D. is Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Dr Smith received his medical degree from Yale Medical School and completed his medical internship, residency, and cardiology fellowship at Peter Bent Brigham (now Brigham and Women’s) Hospital/Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA.

Dr Smith is a past president of the American Heart Association (AHA) and past member of AHA Board of Directors. He was the Chief Science Officer for the AHA and has served multiple appointments on the AHA Science Advisory and Coordinating Committee. He chaired the American College of Cardiology (ACC)/AHA guideline committee to revise PCI guidelines, served on the committee on guidelines for the management of acute myocardial infarction (STEMI), and chaired the AHA/ACC Guidelines on Secondary Prevention for patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease. He served as Co-Chair of the ACC/AHA Bethesda Conference on Professionalism and Ethics and chair of the ACC/AHA Task Force on Practice Guidelines.

Dr. Smith is a past president of the World Heart Federation (WHF). He has chaired the Scientific Advisory Board of the WHF and was Co-Chair of the Scientific Program for the 2010 World Congress of Cardiology in Beijing, China. He served as Chair of the Executive Committee for the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health’s Integrated Guidelines for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and was a Senior Advisor to the NHLBI during that period of time.

Dr Smith has been elected to fellow status in a number of associations including the AHA, ACC, European Society of Cardiology, and Royal Society of Medicine. He is the recipient of Honorary International Membership in the Japanese Circulation Society. Among his many honors include the AHA’s Physician of the Year Award, Distinguished National Leadership Award, Gold Heart Award, Eugene Drake Award, Joseph Stokes Award in Preventive Cardiology and Council of Clinical Cardiology Distinguished Achievement Award; the Ron Haddock AHA/ASA International Impact Award,  The Brazilian Cardiology Society Merit International Teaching Award and the NHLBI/NIH Award of Special Recognition.

Dr. Smith has authored or co-authored more than 350 published papers and chapters and has served on the editorial boards for the Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine, Journal of Clinical and Experimental Cardiology, Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Circulation. He has spoken about heart disease and stroke in interviews with CNN, CBS, and NBC, and is quoted widely by multiple national and international media. Yearly since 1998, he has been elected to Best Doctors in America.
