Sebastian G. Ciancio, D.D.S., is Distinguished Service Professor and Chairman in the Department of Periodontics and Endodontics and is the Director of the Center for Dental Studies at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, in Buffalo, New York. In addition he is Clinical Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University and a Consultant for the Veterans Administration Medical Center and the Erie County Medical Center.

Dr. Ciancio received his degree in Dentistry (D.D.S.) from the School of Dentistry of SUNY where he also completed a NIH Research Fellowship in the Department of Physiology and Fellowships in Pharmacology and Periodontology. His postdoctoral work included studies in Biostatistics at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Periodontology at SUNY; Radio-isotope Techniques at Western New York Nuclear Center; and Clinical Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University.

He has authored or co-authored well over 150 publications pertaining to periodontal disease and dental therapeutics. His work has appeared in such major dental journals at the Journal of Periodontology, the Journal of Periodontal Research, the Journal of the American Dental Association, the International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry, and Periodontology 2000. He is co-author of Clinical Pharmacology for the Dental Professional and editor of ADA Guide to Dental Therapeutics. Currently, Dr. Ciancio is Editor of Biological Therapies in Dentistry, a bi-monthly newsletter for dental professionals, and Consultant for the Journal of Periodontology.

Dr. Ciancio is an active member of several professional organizations: Consultant and past co-chair of the Council on Scientific Affairs of the American Dental Association; Past President of the American Academy of Periodontology; Past President of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation,President of the International Academy of Periodontology and Director of the annual Chautauqua Dental Congress. He is also a member of the International and American Association for Dental Research, and the Federation Dentaire Internationale.

In recognition of his contributions to dental science, Dr. Ciancio has received numerous honors: Fellow of the International College of Dentists; Past President of Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Therapeutics Group of the International and American Association of Dental Research (IADR); Special Citation from the American Academy of Periodontology; Honorary Recognition Award from the University of Chile at Valparaiso; Service Citation from the Pharmacology and Therapeutics Division of the IADR; Orban Memorial Dental Man of the Year Award, presented by Loyola University, Buffalo Dental Alumni Association, the Gies Foundation Award in Periodontics, the Clinical Research Award,the Presidential Award, and the Gold Medal Award presented by The American Academy of Periodontology, Jarvie-Burkhart Award presented by the Dental Society of the State of New York (DSSNY); Distinguished Service Award by the United States Pharmacopeia, the Hirschfeld Award in Periodontics from the Northeastern Society of Periodontists, the Distinguished Scientist Award in Pharmacology from the International Assn. for Dental Research, the Norton Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research from the American Dental Association and, most recently, the Presidential Citation from the American Association for Dental Research. He is also listed in Who’s Who in Continuing Education as a leading continuing education lecturer. He has presented continuing education courses throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe as well as Brazil, Chile, Japan, Australia, Singapore, and Argentina.
