Ruben Hernaez is a Spanish-trained physician, board certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Transplant Hepatology, whose research area is acute-on-chronic liver failure, complications, and rehabilitation of cirrhosis and methodological assessment of papers in gastroenterology and hepatology. Clinically, Dr. Hernaez is one of the three liver transplant physicians at the VA Medical center, amongst the few transplant physicians at the VA. 

He is an associate editor for GUT and is on the editorial board of Hepatology; Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Liver Transplantation. He serves in the AASLD Practice Guidelines Committee and the AGA Research Awards Panel. He enjoys mentoring residents and fellows to become future leaders in academic gastroenterology. He loves watching movies and eating pizza with his family and loves to run with his dog in his spare time.
