He is a practicing Endocrinologist, active in clinical medicine, teaching and research. He was the lead author of the guidelines on Physical Activity/Exercise for the Canadian Diabetes Association (2003, 2008, 2013) and the American Diabetes Association (2006). He holds a Health Senior Scholar salary award from Alberta Innovates-Health Solutions.
He has been the Principal Investigator of four randomized trials evaluating the effects of different types of exercise training in people with or at risk of diabetes, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Canadian Diabetes Association. He was also the senior author of two of the most highly-cited meta-analyses of exercise in type 2 diabetes.
