Richa Garg OD

Assistant Clinical Professor, Rosenberg School of Optometry, University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, Texas

Dr. Richa Garg was born and raised in the NYC suburbs. She graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular and Cell Biology with a minor in Psychology. Dr. Garg then moved to Boston for her Doctor of Optometry at The New England College of Optometry. She subsequently completed her Primary Care/Ocular Disease Residency at The State University of New York College of Optometry at Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center.

After residency, Dr. Garg joined Morris Heights Health Center in New York, NY. It is here where her passion and goodwill for the uninsured and underserved community grew. Dr. Garg specializes in the care of diabetic ocular complications, glaucoma and retinal disease associated with systemic conditions. She also worked in Chicago for several months in retail/commercial optometry settings and the Chicago Public School System.

Dr. Garg left Chicago to pursue the Fellowship in Optometric Medicine and Surgery with The Rosenberg School of Optometry in 2018. The fellowship was located at Golden Eye Associates in Carthage, TX, and the surgical center was at DeSoto Regional Eye Institute in Logansport, LA. This opportunity allowed her to expand her scope of practice while using surgical procedures such as laser capsulotomy, selective laser trabeculoplasty, vitreolysis, laser peripheral iridotomy and chalazion removal in her daily practice. She precepted fourth year students at this externship site and taught students about surgical procedures. This experience led to her desire to teach and solidify the importance of eyecare in rural settings. Dr. Garg joined The Rosenberg School of Optometry faculty as Assistant Clinical Professor after the completion of her fellowship.

Dr. Garg's commitment to health care extends beyond her local experiences. Her compassion for the underserved community led her on several mission trips including El Salvador, Dominican Republic, India, Haiti, Cambodia, Mexico, and Morocco where she served the most indigent areas.
