Randall C. Starling, MD, MPH, FACC, FAHA, FHFSA, FESC, FHFA is a member of the Section of Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Medicine at Cleveland Clinic. He is a Staff Cardiologist in the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. Dr. Starling is former Section Head of Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Medicine 2003-2016, and Vice Chairman of Cardiovascular Medicine 2007-2016 at Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Starling was an elected member of the Cleveland Clinic Board of Governors from 2010-2015. Dr. Starling is past President of the Heart Failure Society of America 2018-2019. Dr. Starling is Professor of Medicine, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of the Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. Starling has been a principal or co-principal investigator on numerous clinical trials, including National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant-funded trials and industry-sponsored trials. He has conducted numerous research trials including multicenter, randomized trials related to cardiac transplantation, heart failure, mechanical circulatory support devices, and pacing therapy.

He has been published in scientific and professional journals and authored numerous chapters in medical textbooks including Braunwald’s Heart Disease and the ESC Textbook of Cardiology. He has published over 500 manuscripts. He has over 88,280 citations and h-index 103. Dr. Starling is a past member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, currently on the editorial board of JACC Heart Failure, Circulation and Heart Failure Reviews. He is associate editor for the Journal of Cardiac Failure. He is past Editor of the chapter on Heart Failure in the American College of Cardiology Self-Assessment Program (ACCSAP VI). He has served as an editorial consultant on ABC’s “20/20,” CNN’s “Heroes in Medicine”, featured on CBS Morning Show, and several PBS televised programs.

Dr. Starling was Program Chair for Clinical Trials in Organ Transplantation heart transplant projects funded by the NIAID. He is a past Board Member of United Network of Organ Sharing, International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, HFSA Board of Directors, and the Cleveland Clinic Board of Governors. He is a current voting member of the FDA Circulatory System Devices panel. Dr. Starling served for six years as a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology examination committee.

Dr. Starling received a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Public Health. He received his medical education at Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society. He returned to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center to complete his internship and residency in internal medicine. Dr. Starling completed a fellowship in cardiovascular disease from the Ohio State University (OSU).
