Dr. Rafael Simó (Hirsh Index: 60; publications: 420. citations: 12833) is Head of Endocrinology and Nutrition Department at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, Director of Diabetes and Metabolism Research Unit at Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), and Deputy Director of Clinical Research at Campus Vall d'Hebron. Prof. Simó was the Coordinator of the European Consortium for the Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy (EUROCONDOR) (HEALTH-2011-FP7-278040) funded by the European Commission (EC). In addition, Prof. Simó is the Coordinator of the RECOGNISED Project (Retinal and cognitive dysfunction: unravelling the common pathways and identification of patients at risk of dementia) which has also been funded by the EC (H2020-SC1-2019-2 stages-RTD-847749) and started in January 2020. He has been the President of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes-Eye complications (EASD-ec) from 2017-2021. Prof. Simó is renowned worldwide for his contributions to the pathophysiology of diabetic complications, in particular diabetic retinopathy.

Prof. Simó received the Spanish Society of Diabetes Award (Rodríguez Miñón Award-2008) for a career in the field of Clinical Research in Diabetes, the “Dr. Josep Trueta” Award of the Academy of Medical Sciences from Catalonia (2011) for his innovative contributions in Biomedicine, the Award of the Spanish Society of Endocrinology (2015) for the development and consolidation of a high-quality research group, the Award for Professional Excellence from the Official Association of Physicians of Barcelona (COMB) (2019), and the Award to the Research Trajectory at the ICS Hospitals (2021).
