Dr. Lawler is a cardiac critical care physician and clinician-scientist at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Toronto General Hospital, where is Associate Director for the Clinical Trials and Translation Unit. He is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology and Interdepartmental Division of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Toronto. His research interests lie at the intersection of acute cardiovascular disorders and systemic critical illness, and employ clinical trials, clinical epidemiology, and translational methods. He has led several international Bayesian adaptive randomized clinical trials in acutely/critically ill patients, and supported the design and implementation of others. His work has been funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and others, and has been published in JACC, the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, the European Heart Journal, Circulation, Intensive Care Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and elsewhere.


Dr. Lawler is funded by a National New Investigator Award from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and receives research funding from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the National Institutes of Health, the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, the LifeArc foundation, the Thistledown Foundation, the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research, and the Province of Ontario. P. R. Lawler has received consulting fees from Novartis, CorEvitas, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and royalties from McGraw-Hill Publishing.
