Dr. Birnbaum is a resident physician in the Department of Family & Community Medicine at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Theater from Vassar College. Following graduation, he worked in politics in Washington, DC, and in San Francisco with physicians providing care at San Quentin State Prison. He then attended a post-baccalaureate premedical program in Baltimore, MD, and subsequently spent two years at Yale University School of Medicine providing research and case management support to physicians caring for individuals with a history of incarceration. He completed his Doctorate of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. His interests include care for individuals being release from the criminal justice system, substance abuse, homeless health care, family planning, and hospital medicine.
