The Eugenia Brin Professor in Parkinson Disease and Movement Disorders, Department of Neurology, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MarylandDr. Lisa Shulman is Professor of Neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She is the Eugenia Brin Professor of Movement Disorders, the Rosalyn Newman Distinguished Scholar in Parkinson Disease, and the Director of the University of Maryland Movement & Memory Disorders Center. Dr. Shulman served as Treasurer of the American Academy of Neurology and has served on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Brain Foundation and the PROMIS Health Organization. Dr. Shulman established the HOME (Health Outcomes Measurement) database more than 20 years ago, now containing data on thousands of patients and tens of thousands of office visits. The challenge of analyzing this complex dataset led to the development of the POD-Vis visual analytic platform for simple data visualization and analysis of any type of clinical dataset.
Dr. Shulman’s major research interest is the experience of chronic medical conditions, including the impact of Parkinson disease on daily function and quality of life. Related interests include the effects of emotional trauma on brain function, cognitive-behavioral disorders, health disparities, exercise, wearable biosensors, outcomes measurement, phenotype-genotype correlations, bioinformatics, and data visualization. She serves as Principal Investigator on numerous NIH-funded studies including developing measures of self-efficacy for managing chronic conditions, the effects of aerobic and resistance exercise, how cognitive impairment affects reliability of responses on questionnaires, and racial disparities in Parkinson disease. Dr. Shulman is author or editor of over 200 books, chapters, and publications.
