Julie Bernhardt is a clinical researcher who has worked with stroke patients for more than 35 years. Professor at The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, Melbourne, Australia, she co-heads the Stroke Theme. A world leading rehabilitation trialist, she is Principal Investigator of international, early mobility trials (eg AVERT, AVERT DOSE) that are building the evidence base to support clinical practice mobility protocols in the first days to weeks post stroke.

Julie has led two international Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Roundtables to develop new research standards, culminating in development of the new International Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Alliance (ISRRA) in 2020. A strong advocate for Women in Science, her contribution to stroke research and science advocacy was recognised in 2019 with an Order of Australia award and 2020 investiture into the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Science.
