Dr. John Baynes is Carolina Distinguished Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology and Neuroscience at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, SC. He is known for his work on chemical modification of proteins by carbohydrates and lipids in aging and age-related chronic diseases. His recent research has focused on chelation as a unifying mechanism of action of drugs commonly used in treatment of diabetes and atherosclerosis, and development of methods to measure metal ion pro-oxidant activity in plasma. He is co-author/editor of a major textbook of Medical Biochemistry, produced by Elsevier and translated into four languages.
