He is known for his work on chemical modification of proteins by carbohydrates and lipids in aging and age-related chronic diseases. His recent research has focused on chelation as a unifying mechanism of action of drugs commonly used in treatment of diabetes and atherosclerosis, and development of methods to measure metal ion pro-oxidant activity in plasma. He is co-author/editor of a major textbook of Medical Biochemistry, produced by Elsevier and translated into four languages.
