Dr. Whittle’s research addresses the management of common chronic conditions. Within this broad area he has studied the use of peer support mechanisms to promote the self management of obesity, hypertension and mental health conditions. This research has been carried out in partnership with community veterans organizations such as the American Legion and DryHootch of America, Inc. He has also worked to engage community members in the research process, from participating in choosing research topics, to advising regarding study design and helping to disseminate study results into practice. He is also works with these organizations to lead Milwaukee VA participation in important clinical trials and the Million Veteran Program, an effort to create a database linking, genomic and lifestyle data to clinical information in a million patients’ health records.
