Jan C. Buckner, M.D., is chair of the Department of Oncology at Mayo Clinic. He serves as deputy director of clinical practice for Mayo Clinic Cancer Center and holds the rank of professor of oncology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

Dr. Buckner attended Wake Forest University and received the M.D. degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Butterworth Hospital and a fellowship in medical oncology at Mayo Clinic.

As a neuro-oncologist, Dr. Buckner specializes in the research and treatment of cancers affecting the brain and nervous system. His research includes the oversight of clinical trials developing novel therapies for patients with brain tumors, the design of correlative studies to determine the clinical significance of histologic and genetic variables in brain tumor tissue, the investigation of interactions among treatment medications, the assessment of neurobehavioral consequences of brain tumors and their treatment, and the evaluation of the methodologic issues in designing clinical trials for brain tumor patients. His work in treatment of patients with low-grade gliomas was cited by ASCO as one of the most significant clinical cancer advances in 2014.

Dr. Buckner has co-authored more than 400 articles and abstracts and has given more than 150 scientific lectures and presentations. His work has been published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals such as New England Journal of Medicine, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of Neuro-Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research, Neuro-Oncology, Nature Genetics and Cancer. He has served as an editorial board member for both the Journal of Clinical Oncology and Neuro-Oncology. Dr. Buckner is the recipient of many honors and awards, including a Best Doctor of Medical Oncology by Best Doctors in America and the Award for Excellence in Clinical Research from the Society of Neuro-Oncology. He recently was named the Betty J. Foust, M.D. and Parents’ Professor of Medical Oncology at Mayo Clinic.

In addition to treating patients, Dr. Buckner holds positions on numerous institutional committees and with professional organizations. He is co-chair of the NCI Cancer Care Delivery Research Coordinating Committee and director of the Cancer Control Program for the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology. He serves on several oncology boards, committees and teams for the National Institutes of Health. His additional memberships include: the External Advisory Board for Adult Brain Tumor Consortium; the External Advisory Board for the University of California San Francisco Brain Tumor Research Center and Oncologic Drug Advisory Committee for the Food and Drug Administration.
