Issac J. Powell MD
Professor, Department of Urology, Wayne State University and Karmanos Cancer Institute, Detriot, MichiganIsaac J. Powell, M.D. is a Professor for Department of Urology at Wayne State University and Karmanos Cancer Institute. His clinical interests are in Urologic Oncology/Urologic Cancer and cancer genetics.
Dr. Powell received his B.S. in Zoology from the University of Michigan; M.S. in Embryology from the Howard University Graduate School; his M.D. from Indiana University Medical School. His medical training was completed at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.
The focus of his research is on the many ways prostate cancer impacts African Americans in comparison to other ethnic groups. His past research has included a community-based education, health care behavior modification and early detection study of prostate cancer among African American men. He is also studying environmental and life style factors such as diet and inflammation in correlation to clinical outcome and how they impact on genes. He was recently funded to examine Metabolic Syndrome and Prostate Cancer. Cancer is a genetic disease and genetic research has to be a part of the search for a cure. He is a part of an International Consortium Prostate Cancer Genetics (ICPCG) group and is comparing hereditary prostate cancer genetic results among African American men in comparison to other ethnicities with other centers around the world. His is also collaborating with Harvard University (The Broad Institute) and Cornell University to examine whole genome and exome sequencing of prostate cancer and potential racial differences. At his institution they have recently published his group's research regarding differential gene expression between African American and European American men using DASL and microarray analysis. They are in preparation of validating their data.
