Irene Caruso is a Research Fellow in the Department of Precision and Regenerative Medicine and Ionian Area, Section of Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Andrology and Metabolic Diseases at the University of Bari Aldo Moro, Bari, Italy.

She is a member of the Educational Board of the Italian Diabetes Society (SID) and the Editorial Board for Journal of Endocrinological Investigation.

Her research interests are innovative treatment options for type 2 diabetes and their cardiovascular and renal benefits. Her scientific production mostly concerned the interpretation of the cardiovascular and renal benefits of GLP-1 receptor agonists and SGLT-2 inhibitors in cardiovascular outcome trials (CVOT) and real-world studies, by means of statistical methods such as meta-analysis and propensity score matching. She is currently exploring the role of tirzepatide in the management of type 2 diabetes undertaking both clinical and basic research projects.
