He obtained a MS in Public Health Dentistry and has been Director of the Geriatric and Special Needs Dental Program for over 30 years. He developed and is currently the Director of the Geriatric and Special Needs Postgraduate Certificate Program and clinical professor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry. Dr. Cowen treats private patients at the College of Dentistry, with an emphasis on geriatric, medically, physically and cognitively impaired adults. He is a fellow of the American Society of Geriatric Dentistry, a diplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry and is the inaugural recipient of the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation Professorship in Geriatric & Special Needs Dentistry.
