Elaine W. Yu, MD, MMSc, is an Assistant Professor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School.  She is a clinical researcher and endocrinologist in the Endocrine Unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and is the Director of the MGH Bone Density Center.  She completed medical school and residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and subsequently completed a fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the MGH.  She holds a Masters in Clinical and Translational Research from the Harvard Medical School.  Dr. Yu’s clinical and research interests are in obesity, bariatric surgery, and bone and mineral metabolism. She has received funding from the NIH and from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation for her research in these fields.  She currently serves as the Principal Investigator of several studies characterizing the long-term negative effects of bariatric surgery on skeletal strength and fracture risk.  She is also leading a novel randomized clinical trial to investigate how altering gut bacteria through fecal microbiota transplantation may affect human body weight and metabolism.
