He completed his general surgery and plastic surgery training at the Johns Hopkins University/UMD residency program. He also holds a master’s of science in engineering in biomedical engineering from the Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering and has a joint appointment as Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering. His primary clinical interests include gender affirmation surgery for transgender patients, as well as complex surgical reconstruction including reconstructive microsurgery. He is the fellowship director of the Johns Hopkins Complex Gender Surgery and Microsurgery training fellowship, and the chief medical director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Transgender Health and leads a multidisciplinary program dedicated to providing comprehensive, affirming care across Johns Hopkins Medicine. Dr. Coon has published over 50 publications and received numerous awards, including a two-time recipient of the D. Ralph Millard award from the Plastic Surgery Foundation for best scientific plastic surgery manuscript and was named a 2013 Innovator of the Year by the Maryland Daily Record. He is also an NIH-funded researcher whose inventions have led to numerous patents and a venture-backed startup company.
