Dawn K. DeCarlo OD, PhD

Director, Center for Low Vision Rehabilitation; Professor of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, School of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama

Dr. DeCarlo received her optometry degree from the UAB School of Optometry in 1992. She completed residency training in vision rehabilitation at the Chicago West Side VA Medical Center and the Hines Central Blind Rehabilitation Center. She served as faculty at the UAB School of Optometry until 2001 followed by a faculty position at Nova Southeastern College of Optometry until 2005. Since that time she has been a member of the UAB Department of Ophthalmology and directs the UAB Center for Low Vision Rehabilitation.  Her research and publications are in the area of vision impairment.  Her previous work examined the effects of age-related macular degeneration on daily function as well as rehabilitation outcomes. She has had two NIH/NEI sponsored research grants to study vision impairment and has just received a grant from the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research to study reading and pediatric vision impairment.
