He is the co-director of the UK Diabetes Research Network, Senior Investigator of the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), Director of the Oxford Health Alliance, and the Emeritus Founding Chairman of the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism (OCDEM).
Having spent most of his career significantly occupied with the delivery of clinical medicine, integrated with teaching and research, Dr. Matthews has published over 260 papers and has lectured widely, including, among other subjects, lectures on the world pandemic of diabetes, insulin resistance and ß-cell failure, the incretin axis and GLP-1, and the etiology of non–insulin dependent diabetes
He has a special interest in teaching, and in the enlargement of academic medicine as a lever for change for good.
