Sternberg is Clinical Director, Englander Institute for Precision Medicine, Professor of Medicine, Weill Cornell Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology, New York-Presbyterian. She is also Chief of the Department of Medical Oncology at the San Camillo-Forlanini Hospital in Rome, Italy and Adjunct Professor at La Sapienza University in Rome. She was Adjunct Professor of Urology and Urological Oncology at Tufts University School of Medicine and the Lahey Clinic in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, and Adjunct Professor at Temple University’s College of Science and Technology in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania undergraduate and medical schools, Dr Sternberg is an internationally respected leader in the fields of medical oncology and urological malignancies.
Dr. Sternberg was the Coordinator for Genitourinary Oncology Education for the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) for many years and has also served on the nominating Committee.
She has served as the Genitourinary Oncology Program Chairman for the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO) and coordinated the first European Multidisciplinary Genitourinary Cancer Symposium (EMUC).
Dr. Sternberg has been the Scientific Coordinator of many international symposia including the European Kidney Cancer Association (KCA) meetings and the ECCO-ESMO-ESTRO meeting in September 2013. She is the Scientific Program Committee Track Leader for the American Association of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in 2014 and has been the Program Chairman and on the Steering Committee of the ASCO Genitourinary Cancer Multidisciplinary Symposium. Dr. Sternberg was an elected Board Member of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) for three terms and is currently on the Executive Committee of EORTC GU Cancer Group..
Principal investigator for numerous studies and an internationally respected researcher, who has lectured extensively at international cancer symposia, Dr. Sternberg is most known for her seminal work in bladder cancer, her publications on targeted agents in renal cell carcinoma and novel therapies for prostate cancer.
Dr. Sternberg has been awarded the title ‘Grande Ufficiale al Merito della Repubblica Italiana’ and has received the Premio Minerva for Scientific Achievement, XVIII Edition for Achievements in Science. Dr.Sternberg has also received the Premio ROSA “Risultati Ottenuti Senza Aiuti", award for special achievement from the Canova Club in 2011.
Dr Sternberg has published extensively in both Medical Oncology and Urology, is an associate editor and editorial board member of several international journals and has co-edited several genitourinary oncology textbooks.
