Professor, Psychiatry & Behavioral Science, Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine, Stanford UniversityChristian Guilleminault DM, MD, DBiol is currently professor in the department of psychiatry and behavior sciences and by courtesy, in the department of neurology, Stanford university medical school, Stanford CA and professor with tenure in the Stanford University Sleep Medicine Division.
He opened the first Sleep Medicine laboratory in 1970 at La Salepetriere Hospital in the Department of Neurology in Paris, with the goal of developing what he called “Sleep Medicine”. As the possibilities offered to accomplish his goal were very limited in this department, he accepted the offer made by Dr William C Dement to accomplish this goal at the University of Sanford, California USA and went to California on January 4th 1972. He was the first editor of the Journal Sleep and was involved in the creation of the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers that changed into the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
He has published 650 peer-reviewed articles, 230 chapters in books in the field of Sleep Medicine and 600 notes and abstracts.
