Cate Speake, PhD, is a Research Assistant Member at the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason (BRI) and Scientific Director of the BRI Center for Interventional Immunology.  Her work has focused on the identification of biomarkers that predict type 1 diabetes disease progression.  She leads BRI’s Experimental Medicine Unit, which conducts small clinical trials to investigate the mechanistic drivers of type 1 diabetes.  With Dr. Jane Buckner, she co-leads the Sound Life Project, aiming to better understand the functional breadth of the healthy immune system. Dr. Speake’s focus is on translating findings in the laboratory to the clinic, using her expertise in analyzing large data sets to help answer clinical questions, from initial work in infectious disease settings to her current work in diabetes and autoimmunity.
