Dr. C.Richard Conti held an endowed chair entitled “Palm Beach Heart Association Eminent Scholar” (Clinical Cardiology),was professor of medicine and Adjunct Professor of Physiology.  Recently (2009) he was designated as Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine.  He is a distinguished 1952 graduate of Central Catholic High School in Allentown, Pennsylvania, a 1956 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Lehigh University and a 1960 AOA graduate of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  He received his medical training on the Osler Medical Service of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and his cardiology training at Johns Hopkins.  He served on the cardiology faculty at that institution from 1968 through 1974 as Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and was Associate Professor of Medicine.  In 1974 at the age of 39, he became Professor of Medicine and Director of the Cardiovascular Division at the University of Florida.  Dr. Conti’s clinical, investigative and teaching interests are primarily in the area of ischemic heart disease, e.g. chronic ischemia, acute ischemia (unstable angina and myocardial infarction), coronary artery spasm and silent myocardial ischemia.   

Dr. Conti was President of the American College of Cardiology in 1989-90. In 1991, he received an Honorary Fellowship from the College of Medicine of South Africa (FCP –SA Hon.).  In May 1996 he was elected to the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars.  In June, 2000, he received a “Docteur Honoris Causa” from the University of Marseilles.  In 2002, he was selected for the Gifted Teacher Award by the American College of Cardiology.  He received the Italian Society of Cardiology “Distinguished Mentor and Scientist Award” in December, 2009.  Dr. Conti is the author or co-author of over 700 scientific papers, book chapters and abstracts and has edited seven books and written two.  He served for 24 years as Editor-in-Chief of the international journal, Clinical Cardiology, served 10 years as Editor-in-Chief of the ACC Audio Journal ACCEL from 1999 to 2010. He is the current editor of volume six, Netter’s Cardiovascular System.
