After receiving his medical degree from the College of Medicine University of Lagos, Nigeria, Dr. Abegunde obtained a Master of Science degree in Tropical Medicine and International Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, United Kingdom (UK). He completed family medicine residency training at the Royal College of General Practitioners, UK, and internal medicine residency and chief residency at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Chicago, Illinois. He completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City, OK. He received further research training in clinical trials from the Global Clinical Scholars Research Training(GCSRT) Program at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Abegunde focuses his clinical and educational efforts on the diagnosis and management of patients with gastrointestinal diseases. His research interests include microscopic colitis and the gut microbiome, specifically Clostridioides difficile (C difficile) and fecal microbiota transplantation. Dr. Abegunde has presented his research at international GI meetings and published in peer-reviewed journals in the field of Gastroenterology.
He is a reviewer for several journals and a member of the American Gastroenterology Association Academy of Educators. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology (FACG), and he serves on the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) ARIA committee.
