Associate Professor of Neurology and Public Health Sciences, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VirginiaDr. Southerland is a Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professor and Associate Professor of Neurology and Public Health Sciences at the University of Virginia. He is the principal investigator for numerous acute stroke clinical trials and was a co-investigator in the Stroke Hyperglycemia Insulin Network Effort (SHINE) study. Dr. Southerland currently serves on the Leadership Committee of the American Heart Association (AHA) Stroke Council and was on the writing committee for the 2019 AHA/ASA Updated Guideline for the Early Management of Acute Ischemic Stroke. His primary research interests include treatment in acute ischemic stroke, innovative methods of prehospital stroke care, and novel applications of telestroke care.
