András Vereckei MD

Associate Professor of Medicine, Head of Cardiology Division, Department of Medicine and Hematology, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary

Dr. Vereckei is Associate Professor of Medicine and Head of Cardiology Division of Department of Medicine and Hematology, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary.

In 1991, Dr. Vereckei obtained a PhD degree in medicine, the title of the PhD thesis was: "The role of free radical reactions in the pathogenesis of amiodarone toxicity". In 2020, he obtained the degree of DSc, the title of the DSc thesis was “Our novel results related to the pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of arrhythmias and heart failure”.

Dr. Vereckei worked in Indianapolis, USA in the Krannert Institute of Cardiology under the direction of Professor Douglas P. Zipes supported by Fulbright Scholarship and as a fellow of Indiana University, Medical School from December 1990 to July 1992 and as a fellow of Indiana University, Medical School from May 1998 to May 2000 and conducted experimental electrophysiology studies.  In December 2007 and April 2009, he visited the Echocardiography Department of the Department of Cardiology, St George’s Hospital, London as a Visiting Fellow and learned advanced echocardiographic techniques under the supervision of Professor George Sutherland.  In 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, he visited The Echocardiography Lab of the Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Sciences of University of Padova for 1-2 weeks and studied 3D echocardiography under the supervision of Professor Luigi Badano.  His main areas of interest are electrocardiography, experimental electrophysiology and echocardiography.

Dr.Vereckei devised and published two new algorithms in 2007 and 2008 for the differential diagnosis of wide QRS complex tachycardias, which is used worldwide and called now „Vereckei algorithm”.  The algorithms were included in the 2015 ACC/AHA/HRS Supraventricular Tachycardia guideline and the 2016 European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) consensus document and the most recent version of the UpToDate chapter about wide complex tachycardias.  He developed novel surface ECG criteria for the estimation of interventricular and left ventricular intraventricular dyssynchrony and the location of latest activated left ventricular region, which are helpful in better selection of patients for cardiac resynchronization therapy.  He devised a novel ECG score for the assessment of the pre-test clinical probability of acute pulmonary embolism, which could better estimate the pre-test probability of acute pulmonary embolism than the recommended clinical prediction rules (Wells and Geneva scores) and an earlier published ECG score (Daniel score).

Dr. Vereckei has 81 scientific and educational communications (among them 3 books, 5 book chapters, 56 medical journal publications, 11 Proceedings, from which 7 Conference Proceedings book chapter, 6 Letters to The Editor).
