Dr. Akihiro J. Matsuoka is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Regenerative Stem-Cell Engineering Laboratory at Northwestern University. Dr. Matsuoka is also the Director of Audiology at Northwestern Medicine. Dr. Matsuoka completed an M.D. and a Doctor of Medical Science (D.M.Sc.) at Kitasato University. He then received a Ph.D. in Computational Neuroscience/Electrophysiology at the University of Iowa. He also completed postdoctoral training in Stem Cell Biology at Indiana University and a surgical fellowship in Neurotology/Skull Base Surgery at the University of California San Diego. Dr. Matsuoka joined the Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University in 2012. Dr. Matsuoka clinically focuses on hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo, including autoimmune inner-ear related disease. He has performed several hundreds of cochlear implant surgery. Dr. Matsuoka’s focus in basic science research is regenerative engineering, including regeneration of the inner ear using human pluripotent stem cells.
