SPOTLIGHT ON Implants & Implant Restorations
This Spotlight On issue, sponsored by the ADA and Elsevier, focuses on relevant articles relating to implants and implant restorations. The eight included articles highlight a couple of important trends:
- We have an increased understanding of how implant restorative designs impact biologic outcomes. Previous articles reviewed in PracticeUpdate Clinical Dentistry have shown that implant crown contours, using a horizontal offset, and choice of restorative materials can influence esthetic and biologic outcomes. In this Spotlight On issue, we highlight two articles that explain when a horizontal offset on implant crowns is especially important.
- We are seeing an expanded clinical application of shorter implants. Previous PracticeUpdate Clinical Dentistry articles have shown that short implants can have favorable success rates, often reduce the need for bone augmentation, and expand clinical applications. In this Spotlight On issue, we highlight how and when extra-short implants (<6 mm) can be successfully used in replacing posterior missing teeth.
